Steamboat's 101st Winter Carnival Kicks Off Tonight at Howelsen Hill

Wednesday, February 05, 2014
If you're in Steamboat tonight, you'll be around for the opening ceremonies of Steamboat Springs' 101st annual Winter Carnival. Events kick off with the crowning of the Winter Carnival Queen and her court at 5:30 p.m. at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill Lodge, located downtown off of 5th Street. Afterward on Howelsen Hill from 6-8 p.m., you can watch locals ski jump at the Speed and Night Flight Ski Jumping Event. Howelsen Hill, which opened in 1915, is known as the oldest continuously operating ski area in Colorado and has the largest and most complete natural ski-jumping complex in North America. It is also credited with helping produce more than 70 Olympians in both Nordic and Alpine events. As we run up to Sochi, where women will compete in ski jumping for the first time, come get a taste of Steamboat's Olympic heritage. The Steamboat Springs Chamber of Commerce has additional Winter Carnival details on its website.

SST Helps with Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition Commercial

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Jeep chose the home base of Steamboat Snowmobile Tours to show off the capabilities of its new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition. When Jeep and its film crew visited SST in December, our staff helped clear out areas of the Routt National Forest for the Wrangler to traverse. We commend Jeep for choosing our home, one of the most consistently snowy areas in North America, to test the Polar Edition. Check out the commercial above for a quick view of SST country.

Steamboat's 40th Annual Cowboy Downhill

Sunday, January 19, 2014

Beyond the serene wilderness we enjoy, our Western culture is another unique characteristic of the Steamboat area. If you're in town this evening, check out the Cowboy Up Party and Balloon Glow at Steamboat Mountain Village. At 5 p.m., six hot air balloons will light up the Steamboat sky from the ski base area. You can take a close look at the beautiful, colorful balloons, or hop on one to be transported to mountain dining. At 6 p.m., ProRodeo cowboys will gather at Bear River Bar & Grill at the ski area base for the Cowboy Up Party and music by Georgia-based folk band Banks & Shane. The cowboys will be "cowboying up" for tomorrow's 40th annual Cowboy Downhill at Steamboat's ski area. On Jan. 20 at 1 p.m., more than 100 ProRodeo cowboys will compete in slalom events and a "stampede" while duded up in their cowboy hats, chaps and full regalia. Olympic champion and Steamboat Director of Skiing Billy Kidd and six-time All-Around World Champion cowboy Larry Mahan came up with the competition 40 years ago, and it remains a signature Steamboat event. Following the Cowboy Downhill stampede, Waylon Jennings' son Shooter will play country and Southern rock at the base area. Steamboat's Western roots provide lots of activities to fill your time around snowmobiling - come join us!

Happy New Year!

Steamboat Snowmobile Tours is in "Colorado’s Snowfall Capital"

Thursday, December 26, 2013

One of our guides shoveling in the Park Range mountains on Christmas Eve

In addition to the special nature of the snow Steamboat receives, the volume is another amazing quality. The Park Range mountains, where we conduct our tours, receive the most winter precipitation in all of Colorado. The reason the Park Range receives the most precipitation is due to the way rain or snow is generated by mountains through orographic precipitation. Orographic precipitation is a term for the process by which moist air is forced up the slopes of mountains to produce rain or snow. Snowfall in our area is the result of storms that originate over the Pacific Ocean and travel inland, producing orographic precipitation in the mountains of California, Utah and Wyoming before reaching Colorado. Fortunately for us, there is a gap of relatively low terrain before Pacific storms reach the northern Colorado mountains. This results in moisture-rich clouds running perpendicularly into the Park Range, where they dump the brunt of their precipitation before traveling on. For a more thorough explanation of this phenomena, please take a look at the research paper “Why is the Park Range Colorado’s Snowfall Capital?” in Colorado Climate. Otherwise, you can come see us – we’d love to show you our record-breaking volume of snow firsthand.

Afar Magazine sent New York-based reporter Ashley Castle to Steamboat Springs earlier this month for the article "A Perfect Week in Steamboat Springs, Colorado." Ashley noted Steamboat Snowmobile Tours as a major highlight of her trip and aptly titled the segment "Live Adventurously." The article has great ideas for places to visit while you're in Steamboat, including cowboy outfitter F.M. Light & Sons, Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Steamboat Mountain. Check out Ashley's Instagram for more cool pictures of her snowmobile adventure. Thanks to Afar for the exciting piece and to Ashley for taking a tour with us. We love helping all our guests "Live Adventurously."
